Mariam’s Journey
Mariam’s journey with St. Jude Africa Children’s Foundation began in May 2022, when her family needed medical guidance, wound care, and practical support after years of uncertainty.
Mariam was eight years old when she first came into the foundation’s care. Her family needed clearer medical information, treatment guidance, and support for daily care.
How Mariam came into care
Mariam had been living with complications related to Spina Bifida, and her family needed clearer medical information, treatment guidance, and support for daily care.
Her mother had carried years of worry without a clear diagnosis. St. Jude Africa helped connect Mariam to medical review, care planning, and follow-up so the family could better understand what was happening and how to respond.
Mariam was connected to examination, diagnosis, treatment, and care guidance.
Her mother received clearer information and help navigating the next steps.
Food and bedding support helped Mariam stay healthier while care continued.
Diagnosis, treatment, and support
After assessment, doctors identified Spina Bifida-related complications and explained the condition to Mariam’s family. The medical team cleaned and treated the wound area and prescribed medicine to begin the healing process.
For St. Jude Africa, the work was not only the clinic visit. It also included helping Mariam’s mother understand the care plan and making sure the family had practical support after treatment began.
The path after this first visit
This first care story became the beginning of a longer journey. Mariam’s later updates show the continuing need for mobility support, surgery follow-up, school access, and family care.
Her story continues through the June 2023 care update, the August 2023 mobility update, the April 2024 follow-up, and the later wheelchair support story.
Help care continue for Mariam and other children.
