Nakazibwe Shirah recounts the joy she felt when she gave birth to her first child, Nabwire Salima, at Nambale Health Center in Iganga district on Monday, January 9, 2021. The happiness was short-lived as, at 17 weeks old, Salima’s behavior changed, and she began to experience frequent illnesses.
Despite numerous visits to various hospitals, no improvement was seen until they arrived at Nakavule Hospital. There, doctors diagnosed Salima with spina bifida, a condition where the spine and spinal cord do not develop properly in the womb, leading to a gap in the spine and causing hydrocephalus (water on the brain).
Spina bifida is a neural tube defect that affects the development of the baby’s brain and spinal cord. This condition has posed significant challenges for Salima and her family.
Nakazibwe Shirah tirelessly sought help and support for her daughter but faced many obstacles. The situation worsened when her husband abandoned the family, leaving Nakazibwe as a single mother struggling to provide for her children and manage Salima’s condition. Despite the difficulties, she remains determined not to give up on her daughter.
After nearly two years of enduring this difficult situation, Nakazibwe Shirah was connected with the St. Jude Africa Children’s Foundation (JACF). The foundation has pledged to support her and Salima through these challenging times. Nakazibwe remains hopeful and steadfast, believing that with the help of well-wishers and the grace of God, Salima can have a better life.
St. Jude Africa Children’s Foundation calls upon kind-hearted individuals to support Salima through donations, prayers, and advice.
