“Look past the disability and see the person…”

Dr. Gary Edwards – United Cerebral Palsy Birmingham

About

Ryan

Ryan was born with Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles.

Ryan had never received a proper diagnosis and treatment for his disability, mostly because his family did not have the resources or information on where to go for help. But even in these unfortunate circumstances, his mom has been very loving and supportive, willing to do anything for his lovely son.

At the initial evaluation, we found out that Ryan’s mom is a single parent with four kids and has no means to earn a living. This means that Ryan will have to be enrolled in our long-term care and rehabilitation program. His urgent need right now is a CP chair as prescribed by the doctor.

After Care: June 2022

Ryan has now received clinical rehabilitation, fortified meals to help with his malnutrition, bedding, and personal care items. Our next plan is to figure out how he can continue receiving treatment and care. He urgently needs a CP chair.

There has been so much stigma from neighbors and even friends about my special needs child. St. Jude has given me hope and a future for my son.

Ryan’s Mom

After Care: September 2022

Mulondo Ryanof Nakanyonyi is 7years. He was brought to us last year, diagnosed with Cebral Palsy. He was in critical condition whereby and his mother was nearly giving up. She is a single mom of three kids the husband ran away from the family after knowing Ryan’s condition. The mother had no viable source of income then. She was a housewife who on some occasions washed people’s clothes in the neighborhood to survive with the kids.

We thank God for he has promised that those who attain faith in Him and do righteous deeds will be blessed with good and happy life in the world. Moreover, in the hereafter they will be given the best reward ever. I believe it was God who made it for her. By getting help through St Jude Children’s Foundation, now for a year, she has been relieved and has found space to take good care of herself and the children.

We booked Ryan’s care and treatment at Nalufenya Children’s Hospital in Jinja, and this is where he gets his weekly treatment and support. We thank the Almighty lord for what He is doing in Ryan’s life. He has greatly improved.

His doctor advised us to get him a CP chair tom improve his quality of life. We thank everyone who stood with us in fundraising his CP chair.

His mother is also extremely happy because we started a small business for her, making liquid soap and it is going well. This small enterprise is helping to provide the necessary basic needs like food and shelter.

Of course, Ryan’s situation still needs more financial support, attention, and proper care, but he is not where he used to be, thanks to our friends and supporters. We plan to get for him a school which can handle Ryan’s condition. Our mission to see Ryan growing happy and healthy.

Treating people and God’s creatures with kindness and benevolence is also another important means for getting rid of worries and anxiety. However, a believer is much more rewarded for this kindness.

When a person is afflicted with any calamity or any trouble, he should think of how many blessings and bounties he has, making such comparison between his hardships and the blessings he is endowed with, such person will realize that the hardships he has are nothing besides God’s gifts and blessings upon him.
