In May 2022, we received Mariam of 8yrs in the worst painful condition and we registered her in our care. Mariam was born with a condition called Spina Bifida, a congenital malformation of the spinal cord. This affects the vascular supply to the lower limbs, causing fluid retention that creates those deep wounds/ ulcers for drainage.
For the last 8 years of her life, Mariam’s mother did not know the exact diagnosis for her child, and this is made it so hard to understand her pain and take better care of her.
Mariam came in with a deep ulcer on her left foot and her Mom informed us that they had done everything but the wound wont heal. We took Mariam to the care facility where all children in our care receive first line treatment. Upon examination, the doctors diagnosed Mariam with Spina Bifida and they explained to her parents how the disease affects humans like Mariam and how to take care of them. The doctors properly cleaned the wound and prescribed some medicine to help start the healing process.
I am so happy that I now have people at St. Jude who are willing to walk with me on this journey. Thank you for saving my daughter.

Mariam’s Mom
Nangobi Mariam of 9 years old from Kamuli. She was tested with spinal bifina for over seven years. Mariam has been battling chronic wounds on her left leg for the most of her child life. She has visited many hospitals including CORSU in Entebbe, Mulago in Kampala and Kamuli for consultation and medication.
Doctors opted for the surgery, because all treatment options were not helping and the wounds were growing bigger in size, eating away her leg tissue.
“I can’t bear to hear her cry, let alone see tears in her eyes; it can give me a heart attack,” – her mother narrated.
Mariam’s parents and the foundation seconded for the surgery. We took her for surgery, so that she can thrive in good health condition. The dates for her amputation were set and her operation went on very well. She was retained in the hospital for seven days for her recovery period where she was regularly monitored by her doctors.
With God’s mercy Mariam discharged from the hospital, after being discharged the doctor’s advised us to be bring her for further treatment every after two days.
St. Jude Africa Children’s Foundation with generous help from funders, supporters, and stakeholders, took the responsibility of caring her and the mother throughout this medical process and she is road to a promising recovery.
The operation was carried out at St. James Surgical Center in Jinja, and she’s still getting treatment from there. We still call upon for donations because Mariam needs a prosthetic leg which can help her in long run and proper care. We believe that this will bring her inexplicable joy.
Regardless of how bad her days have been in life; I know she always counts on us to make her feel better. What we write here is not even enough to express how much gratitude we have for all those that have been part of Mariam’s journey.
Mariam continues to receive her medication and we still require funding and prayers for her to get treatment in time because she’s still in much pain. Any donations to support her are welcomed through our donation platforms. Our utmost desire is to always make her feel happy. I derive so much pleasure, and I thank everyone who was always there for her, whenever we needed you ❤.
We thank the Almighty God for Mariam’s life and for those who have stood with us may, God bless you all. Special thanks go to our team at JACF and family for the great work and support we give to children in pain and crisis.
Friends and followers of Mariam’s care journey, we are back again with another update. For starters, we appreciate everyone who relentlessly supports our work here at St. Jude Africa Children’s Foundation and those who have been working with us on Mariam’s care journey.
In June, Mariam underwent several surgeries including an amputation and we worked together with you to fundraise the much needed funds for her hospital care. When she got discharged, Mariam needed crutches since the ones she had been using could not support her anymore.
We reached out to you and you listened to our call. Mariam got her new clutches and she is extremely happy that she can now manage her movements and has been able to go back to school.
Mariam’s journey of hope is not over yet, it is just getting started and it is because of numerous people that have made a difference in her life and that of her mom. We thank you and we invite you to continue supporting Mariam and other children in our care.
Nangobi Mariam, a 10-year-old girl from Kamuli, is a beneficiary of our foundation. She has been diagnosed with Spinal Bifida and still requires your assistance. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported Mariam’s left leg amputation. Thanks to the Almighty God, the amputation was successful, and she has now recovered.
However, recently her right leg has developed severe wounds. We have sought medical treatment for her, but the doctor has confirmed that amputation is necessary for this leg as well, as the wounds cannot be healed. Before proceeding with the amputation, the doctor suggested that we provide her with crutches and a prosthetic leg for her left side. This way, even after the amputation, she would have the means to support herself.
Unfortunately, Mariam’s old crutches have broken due to her weight, and she is unable to walk. As parents, we want her to maintain hope and comfort during this second amputation, which is why we are reaching out for support. The doctor informed us that a prosthetic leg costs approximately 1.8 million Ugandan Shillings ($500) or more. He assured us that after the second amputation, Mariam will be able to lead a better life.
We humbly call upon all the kind-hearted individuals associated with St. Jude to join us in standing with our daughter Mariam. It is difficult to comprehend the challenges she is currently facing. We kindly request your contributions, whether it be a one-time donation or a weekly/monthly donation.
